Discover Taiwanese Craftsmanship Through Formosa Tea
Formosa, Taiwan, Republic of China—this island in Southeast Asia goes by many names. In the tea world, Taiwan is traditionally referred to as Formosa, a name given by 16th-century Portuguese explorers who called it ilha formosa, meaning "the resplendent island."
Tea cultivation in Taiwan began in the late 18th century when tea plants from Fujian Province in China were introduced. By the 19th century, Formosa tea gained popularity both locally, where tea drinking is deeply ingrained in Taiwanese culture, and internationally.
Known primarily for its high-quality oolong (blue-green) teas, Taiwan also produces exceptional black teas. The island’s geographical position provides ideal conditions for growing Camellia sinensis, ensuring that its teas are revered worldwide.
Discover Your New Favorite Oolong Tea with Our Formosa Collection
At Betjeman & Barton, Formosa oolong teas can be enjoyed in the morning or throughout the day.
- Start Your Day Right : Begin your morning with a robust tea experience. Try our “Formose Lapsang Crocodile”, a powerful, intensely smoky tea. Brew it for 5–7 minutes at 80°C to create a rich, flavorful cup that pairs beautifully with a traditional English breakfast.
- Mid-Morning or Tea Time Treat : For a mid-morning break or an afternoon tea ritual, explore our diverse range of Formosa oolong teas, each with unique oxidation levels: “Formose Pouchong Blatt”: Hand-rolled following northern Taiwanese traditions, this lightly oxidized tea harvested in March and April offers a delicate, mellow flavor. “Formose Vert Jade”: A delightful blue-green tea with floral peach undertones. This tea's golden liquor can be re-infused multiple times to extend your enjoyment. “Formose Grand Oolong”: Semi-fermented with comforting chestnut notes, this low-caffeine tea is perfect for a relaxing moment, even late in the day.
- End Your Day with Elegance : Conclude your evening with “Formose Dragon Noir”, a celebrated Taiwanese specialty. Enjoy it plain to savor its subtle chestnut aftertaste, making for a perfect end to your day.
